Headlice have been around for centuries. Reports suggest that as many as 50% of children aged 4-11 are carrying them. It is important to be able to TREAT headlice as soon as possible before they spread and if at all possible use shampoos, conditioners and treatments which contain ingredients traditionally use to PREVENT lice and help reduce the possiblity of catching them. 1. Head lice have a life span of about 30 days. They are very small and tend to be light brown in colour. The female louse's mission is to lay her eggs or nits close to the scalp. 2. After about 7 days, new head lice (nymphs) hatch from the nits which then mature within 14 days ready to start laying more nits. With a short life cycle like as this, it is easy to understand how very quickly the scalp can become infested; it is possible for hundreds of lice to live on the scalp. 3. Headlice like warm environments and so they tend to stay close to the scalp, clinging on with their legs. Studies suggest that they have no preference for hair type or condition. For more information on this on www.nhs.uk HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE HEAD LICE IN THE FAMILY? As we are all different, everyone will have different symptoms. In many cases head lice cause itching of the scalp, particularly around the base of the scalp and behind the ears. You may also see adult lice in the hair. They cling into the hair shaft with their legs and a glue like substance making them difficult to remove with normal combing. The eggs of head lice, (nits), gather around the base of the hair. When the lice hatch the white ruptured egg case remians in the hair. WHAT CAN YOU DO? There have been suggestions that head lice are now building up resistance to chemical insectide lotions used on the hair to treat headlice. Blossom & Berry believe PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE Using a range of shampoos to which may deter the lice is much easier, cheaper and less time consuming than having to treat the head lice infestation.
